Was privleged to spend a year of Saturdays in a program for gifted kids in the NYC public school system when I was in 5th grade.I am so grateful for the year of multi-media work that I did along with several of my classmates.  A year of Saturday classroom instruction.  We were in elementary school, three of us, from PS 26.  I will never forget that time.  Lost my art after my sophomore year of college, let the passion slip away, and then this summer, painted a mural at a United Cerebral Palsy children’s center with the NFP artist’s group, Splashes of Hope.  And thought back to those Saturday mornings in Brooklyn at Pratt.  Thank you Pratt. l and Happy 125th!!!

Relationship to Pratt – Graduate student
Year of memory – 1991
Location of your memory – Pratt Studios

My most intense memory from Pratt Interior design graduate program is my thesis project and its presentation day. My thesis was “Thirteen-wnet.  An alternative use for New York Coliseum building”. I remember I took special permission from the chairman Gustav Rohrs because the building was huge and as an international student I had to finish design it during one semester. They really gave me all freedom and support to pursuit and finish my topic. Weeks without sleeping but happy I did it. During presentation (photo A) the class was full from professors and students. Gus Rohrs, David Nahon, Martha Carder, Jim Morgan and couple others I cannot remember judge my work. They gave me an “astonishing A!” and my thesis work was part of the Pratt Puck building show after a month (photo B: my roommate E.J.Lee and myself in front of my thesis). Pratt also honored me with the “Harold Leeds award for excellence in interior design” on a special ceremony before graduation. (photo C: with my parents at Pratt holding the award)

All floors at Willoughby Hall have girls from India who have gave us their traditional outfits, helped us to get dressed and even did our make up to look exacly like them! The photo is taken during a traditional dance they were teaching us.

Relationship to Pratt – Graduate student.
Year of memory – 1989
Location – Willoughby Hall

It was christmas, December 1989 and none of us went back home. I am from Greece and I was sharing a room on the 15th floor of Willoughby Hall with E.J. Lee from Korea and Mayda Freiji from Lebanon. The girls from next room Violleta and Aggeliki from Greece came over and we all have late dinner together with our pyjamas waiting Santa to come over. At midnight I close all lights in the room and couple of minutes later when christmas day came, lights came back and Santa’s presents were there ! ! The photo is taken on my bed with the timer of my camera (that’s why I am the only one standing after running not to miss being in the picture).

Relationship to Pratt: Graduate Student, Class of 1967
Year of Object: ????
Location: Inter-scholastic Trophy

A friend of mine found this trophy at a local yard sale. Since I attended Pratt before him (1960-1967), he thought I might recognize it. It predates me and another friend who graduated in 1959.  I’d be glad to send it to you if you are interested in it for your recall project.  It does contain “Pratt Institute” as well as “PI” in an ornate laurel wreath piece added onto the body of the trophy.

Year of memory – 1973
Location of your memory – Willoughby Hall

I had just flown in from San Francisco and hired a chauffered limo to drive my to Pratt from JFK (I had heard cab drivers would rip you off). The unmarked cadillac pulled in front of the dorm, and fellow students in cutoffs and tee shirts just stared as my chauffer took my bags into Willoughby. I was shocked when I saw how filthy my dorm room was, and I cried on the phone back home that night complaining………I was told to “accept it”, Apparently word spread in the dorm that some rich kid with SFO tags on his luggage had arrived in the dorm. I was told this by another student who I met the next day, who said she wanted to come to my room and cry on my shoulder, as she was from San Francisco too, and hated the hot, sticky, cockroach infested dorm.

just good memories of the classes I took there and the classmates, but the teachers were the ones the meant to most to me, I owe my career to them, they did a very good job on me. my first job was with skidmore, owings and merrell. Also driving a cab in manhattan to pay for my schooling, what fun, I would not do that now….
